Politics & Religion
Get Involved!
"All that good men must do to see
evil triumph is nothing."
- Edmund Burke
Have you ever heard this statement?
"Two things things to avoid if you
want to keep the peace is religion and politics."
If you have heard it, and believed it,
you have been essentially neutralized. Yes, these are volatile issues,
especially when mixed together, and wisdom and tact is certainly needed
in such discussions. But the reason they are volatile is because they are
powerful, especially when mixed together!
The very freedom that we have in the United
States of America is because of the religious beliefs of our founding fathers
(and it should be known that the word "religion" was, in their minds equivalent
with Christianity, not just any religion). The mixing of religion and politics
is what produced the most powerful, prospersous and blessed nation on the
face of the earth.
Our constitution was made for
a religious and moral people and is wholly inadequate for the government
of any other. - John Adams
"The Highest glory of the constitution
was that it connected in one indissoluable bond the principles of civil
government and Christianity"
- John Quincy Adams
"The bible offers government its surest
support."
- George Washington
But the Christian foundation in our nation
has been seriously eroded. We find ourselves at a place where a massive
re-education effort is needed to restore the historical truths that have
been systematically removed from our culture by a public school system
that has kicked God out of the classroom.
Buy the way, I provide Christian History
presentations for those who are interested. If you are interested in hosting

Current Issues
I am supporting Mike Huckabee for President, 2008. Below is a letter
I have sent out.
A Plea for Consolidation
& Action
As Christians, we understand
the huge importance of having righteous leaders in our government. Particularly
when it comes to the Presidency of the United States. But few things can
derail that goal more than the “divide and conquer” strategy. This
is just my humble opinion, but here is how I see the conservative political
field:
Don’t Compromise Primary Christian Values
As Christians we must
not compromise principle by supporting a partially acceptable candidate
just because we think he can win (electability). To do that is to let the
pollsters and the media shape the future of our nation by telling us who
to support.
The most important
criteria is human life. Anyone who is weak on the abortion issue is automatically
out of the picture. Other issues are family, marriage and homosexual issues.
How can god bless our nation if we keep murdering babies and pervert the
most basic and natural institutions of God? After these come economy, national
security etc. And, of course, the candidate should be a Christian, not
a member of a cult that tries to sell itself as Christian.
Who Are The Candidates?
As far as I can tell,
these are the candidates that deserve consideration as men who meet Christian
criteria: Mike Huckabee, Sam Brownback, Tom Tancreedo, and Duncan Hunter.
If you believe some of the other candidates are qualified, then contact
me and I would be happy to share why I don’t believe any of the other "front-runners"
qualify.
Secondary Factors (including Electability)
After (and only after)
we identify a list of candidates who’s beliefs do not compromise Christian
values, then we can look at some other issues which include whether or
not they can win. Three key issues at this point are: a) experience, b)
communication skills, and c) electability.
Momentum
Now, lets talk about
momentum. The raw truth is that the best candidates don’t have the kind
of money available to them to buy momentum with advertising. But due to
the media coverage at the upcoming Iowa Straw Poll in Ames on August
11th, a win there can provide a huge boost in momentum, not to mention
the open doors and financial support that could be generated by that boost.
This event may be our best shot at putting a genuine conservative Christian
in the race for the white house. If one of the men from the list
above doesn’t win, or do very very well there, a huge opportunity for momentum
will be lost - not to mention the chance for a man of God in the White
House and the national and international ramifications that go with it.
A Plea for Consolidation
Now for my plea. Frankly,
I believe Mike Huckabee is the right choice for Iowa Christians to support
at the Straw Poll. He already seems to have risen to top of the group mentioned
above. But lets consider our secondary qualifying factors:
Experience.
As the governor of a state, Huckabee has experience in an executive role,
and he was very successful in that role where he had to deal with a legislature
that was “on the other side of the aisle.” No offense, but senators and
congressmen do not have that experience and we have no way of judging how
well they will function in such a role.
Communication skills.
Huckabee has excellent communication skills. If you have listened to him
you know that. That is what also made him a successful pastor before he
entered the political arena, and this is what gave him the ability to accomplish
so much as a governor. He took the issues to the people and then the people
convinced the legislature to support the issues. We need a president who
can and will do the same with the people of our nation and actually teach
us the basic principles upon which our nation was founded, and explain
why we should go a certain direction. This is a skill that is essential
for national unity.
Electability.
Now, electability becomes a valid issue. If we can hand Mike Huckabee a
win at the Iowa Straw Poll and a win in the Iowa Caucuses, he is not only
electable as the party nominee, but he can win over the liberals. If his
opponent should be Hillary, no one knows her better than he. He uniquely
qualified to match up against her, being from the same state. He knows
her tactics first hand. Add this to the experience column - and add his
communication skills, and we have a candidate who can relate to the people
and who can win in 2008.
Having said these things,
I make a sincere plea: Let’s consolidate behind Mike Huckabee and support
him in the Iowa Straw Poll on August 11. Let’s not defeat ourselves with
a divide and conquer strategy. We are on the same side.
Sincerely,
Pastor Brad Sherman
Coralville, Iowa
