Linus Pauling (1901–1994), winner of two Nobel Prizes stated: “You
can trace every sickness, every disease and every ailment to a mineral
deficiency.” An article presented to the U.S. Senate in 1936 raised the issue of mineral depletion in the farms of America. Some have attacked the science behind the article, but more recent studies indicate that there is good reason for the concerns it raised. A statement that came out of the 1992 Rio Earth Summit says, “...there is deep concern over continuing major declines in the mineral values in farm and range soils throughout the world”. This statement was based on data showing that over the last 100 years, average mineral levels in agricultural soils had fallen worldwide – by 72% in Europe, 76% in Asia and 85% in North America. It seems that crops grown with commercial fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides don’t draw important micro-nutrients out of the soil and don’t put as much back into the soil as they should. The result is poor soil, nutrient deficient foods, and that one can over eat but still be under nourished. Are There Solutions? (Continue) |
